Who we are
Viulumo Alpert & Kallinen Oy is a string instrument workshop in Helsinki dedicated to friendly service and work of the very highest quality.
We are specialised in violin, viola and cello set-up and bow rehair for soloists and professionals, and advanced repairs and restorations of bows and violin family instruments.
We provide instrument set-up, repair and restoration, as well as bow services for players of all levels. At Viulumo you can find your next violin or bow, chinrest, strings or rosin, or advice and support in all violin, viola and cello-related matters.

We also focus on making new instruments and bows, developing appreciation for quality contemporary instruments, and learning from the great history and traditions of violinmaking.
We are working with contemporary violin makers worldwide to offer top quality instruments for trial and sale here in Helsinki and around Finland.
We have plans to offer innovative solutions for making quality instruments available to students through our flexible, affordable rental program.

Lauri Kallinen
In Jyväskylä, Finland, Lauri played violin from childhood and made his first instrument as his final project to graduate from Jyväskylä Waldorf School, under the tutelage of violinmakers Mika Lahtinen and Helmut Bleffert.
He attended Newark School of Violinmaking from 2006-2009. After school he worked in Germany at workshop of Wolfram Ries and at Risto Vainio in Helsinki before establishing his own business. After a couple of years he began a cooperation with Toonika, which lasted for five years.
In June 2021 Alpert & Kallinen opened on Vänrikki Stoolin katu, in the Töölö neighborhood of downtown Helsinki.
Mayim Alpert
After growing up in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, Mayim studied a Bachelor's degree in Music Composition as a guitarist, at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN. He continued to Red Wing, MN, to build and repair guitars. There he studied violin repair and restoration with Lisbeth Nelson Butler and fell in love with the craft.

After years working as a luthier and theatre musician in Prague, CZ, he moved to Helsinki, eventually meeting Lauri in 2015. From 2017 he has focused on bows, working with Lauri at Toonika, creating the strong duo team which led them to form Alpert & Kallinen in 2021.

Viulumo Alpert & Kallinen Oy was founded in January 2024.
